Dealu Mare Cycling Route – a pilot project of Carpathian Tourism Cluster Romania, Asociatia Monteoru Renaissance and CyclingRomania

Route length: 140 km
Route description: The new “Dealu Mare Cycling Route” passes through the most beautiful parts of the Dealu Mare region, giving cycling tourists an excellent overview of Romanian culinary and wine tradition, culture and nature. Starting from Ghighiu and ending at Ciolanu Monastery, the route runs through the most important vineyards and hills at Seciu, Urlati, Ceptura, Tohani, Sahateni, Pietroasele, Merei and Sarata Monteoru.
Biking time: max. 5 days, intermediate level (hilly and flat terrain)


Tourism Attractions along the cycling route:

  • Winery visits and wine tasting: Traditional mansions and wine cellars (see a list with leading wineries in the region)
  • Culinary adventures: Truffle hunting in Buzau
  • Religion: Famous monasteries and churches (i.e. Ciolanu and Ghighiu monastery, stone church of Naeni)
  • Art: Open air sculpture camps at Naeni and Magura
  • Archaeological sites: Thracian graves at Naeni, Stone quarry with fossils at Naeni, Roman sites at Pietroasele, “Monteoru culture”, find spot of the Hen with Golden Chicken” treasure at Pietroasele
  • Spa: Salty waters of Sarata Monteoru (swim like in the Dead See in Israel)
  • Nature: Beautiful panorama on top of the hill at Seciu, Naeni and Ciolanu, beautiful oak and fir woods at Plopu, Monteoru and Magura
